Basingstoke grew from a market town into one of the largest towns in Hampshire in about forty years, and the shape of it still shows that: ring roads, business parks and estates named after the farms they replaced. Around it are Chineham, Oakley, Bramley, Overton, Whitchurch, Kingsclere and Tadley, and the wider north Hampshire country running out towards Alton and Andover.

Basingstoke Online reports from the public record. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council publishes its planning register, licensing notices, committee papers and budgets, and those documents decide most of what changes here long before anyone sees it happen. We read them and write down what they say, with a link to the original on every fact.

What is inside

  • House prices: what homes actually sold for, ward by ward, from Land Registry records rather than asking prices.
  • Trains to London: the fastest Waterloo services, walk-up fares, season tickets and what station parking adds.
  • Roadworks and travel: every current closure with its dates and diversion, plus the routes and car parks that carry the town.
  • Planning news: the Local Plan, the 20,402-home requirement, the water supply problem holding it up and where each big site stands.
  • Things to do: verified prices and opening days for Basing House, Milestones, Highclere, The Vyne and the free ones.
