Seven of the borough's 17 forecourts charged over £2 a litre for diesel on Sunday. The cheapest was 198.9p, at three sites. Here is every price.

Seven of the 17 petrol stations in Basingstoke and Deane were charging more than £2 a litre for diesel on Sunday afternoon. The other ten were at 198.9p or 199.9p. Not one forecourt in the borough was selling diesel for less than 198.9p.

The figures are the prices each forecourt reported to Fuel Finder, the government’s price register. Under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025, every fuel retailer must submit a price change within 30 minutes. We took the file the scheme published at 4pm on Sunday 4 October and matched each forecourt’s postcode to the borough.

Ten of the 17 are in or on the edge of Basingstoke itself. The rest are at Turgis Green (about six miles north-east), Tadley (about seven miles north), Kingsclere (about eight miles north-west), Popham on the A303 (about eight miles south-west), Whitchurch (about 12 miles west) and Tothill on the A34 (about 13 miles north-west).

The spread is small. The dearest diesel in the borough is 4p a litre more than the cheapest. On a 55-litre fill that is £2.20. Petrol varies more: 174.9p at Houndmills, Turgis Green and Gales Garage, against 181.9p at Tothill and Micheldever. That is 7p a litre, or £3.85 a tank.

The most recent diesel changes in the borough were at the two Grove Road forecourts, on Friday 2 October, and at the Shell in Buckskin, on Saturday 3 October. All three are now in the over-£2 group.

How it got here

The government’s own weekly series tells the national story. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero put the average UK diesel price at 197.58p on Monday 28 September 2026. On 9 February it was 140.72p.

Line chart of the average UK diesel pump price each Monday in 2026. It starts at 144.19p on 5 January, falls to 140.72p on 9 February, climbs to 192.14p on 13 April, eases to 164.52p on 13 July, then rises every week to 197.58p on 28 September.

The rise came in two waves:

  • February to April: from 140.72p on 9 February to 192.14p on 13 April.
  • A summer dip: back down to 164.52p by 13 July.
  • July to now: up every single week since, to 197.58p.

Some outlets are calling this a record. On the government’s weekly figures, it is not one yet. The highest weekly average on record is 199.22p, on 4 July 2022. The 28 September figure is the fourth highest, 1.64p below it. The next weekly figure is due on Tuesday 6 October, and at the current rate it could pass the 2022 mark.

What it means for you

A 55-litre fill of diesel at 199.9p costs £109.95. At February’s average of 140.72p, the same fill would have cost £77.40. That is £32.55 more a tank.

  • The cheapest diesel in the borough is 198.9p, at Houndmills on Aldermaston Road South, at Turgis Green and at Whitchurch.
  • Avoid the A303 services if you can. Popham charges 202.9p and Micheldever 201.9p for diesel.
  • Grove Road’s two forecourts both charge 201.9p. Morrisons on Worting Road charges 199.9p.
  • Check the live price before you go. Every forecourt has to report a change within 30 minutes, and the data is open for apps and comparison sites to use.

If you are driving this week, the M3 northbound is closed at night between junctions 10 and 7 until Thursday. The details are on our roadworks page. For town-centre charges, see parking in Basingstoke.

How we did this: we downloaded the Fuel Finder price file published at 16:00 BST on 4 October 2026 and matched every forecourt postcode to its council area using postcodes.io. We excluded forecourts marked as closed. “Middle price” is the median. Basingstoke and Deane had 17 open forecourts reporting a diesel price. A forecourt that has not registered with the scheme would not appear.
